SAUTER undertakes research for an innovative energy future

Basle, 3rd July 2012: energy costs make up a growing portion of the total costs of industrial production. SAUTER is a leader in the integrated logging, evaluation and optimisation of energy consumers and the related costs. The company has now joined up to the Future Factory Initiative organised by SAP Research, which promotes innovation in this sector.

There are several systems available that are designed to assist companies with their resource planning and with production planning and control (PPC); most are capable of optimising the use of raw materials, machine usage and transport routes, but a lot of them lack features relating to energy consumption. The SAUTER Energy Management Solution (EMS) provides a remedy. It comprehensively analyses the energy consumption of the production buildings, the machines used in manufacturing, the means of transportation and the IT infrastructure. Using this raw data as a basis, EMS creates consumption profiles. They are correlated in the PPC, together with forecasts regarding energy provision, and any discrepancies are minimised by adapting the production plan accordingly. Moreover, because energy consumption is chronicled in such detail, it is possible to assess all the resources that are used in the manufacture of a product and draw up a CO2 assessment for that product.

Practice-orientated research initiative

SAUTER has been a partner in SAP's Future Factory Initiative since January 2012. SAP's research department founded the initiative in order to promote research and innovation for the manufacturing and processing industries. Apart from SAP itself, there are over twenty industrial firms involved in the project. Various products, including some from SAUTER, are in use in the Future Factory, where they are evaluated in a typical testing environment and in different scenarios.

Prototype successfully tested

As one of the initial fruits of their collaboration, the two companies have developed a prototype for an EMS-PPC system. This examines how the energy consumption of a production system – i.e. of production facilities and buildings – can be matched to the ever-changing supply of renewable energies. The analysis includes all of the processes and buildings that have a bearing on energy consumption. Also taken into account are the supply of regenerative energy sources and factors such as the requirements of the product or the prediction of energy availability. The aim is to achieve a system of production control that is optimised in terms of energy usage, matching supply with demand as closely as possible.

The prototype constructed by SAUTER and SAP as part of the project is one of the first practical results of the collaboration between the two companies. It provides the industry with a simple yet effective means of measuring, recording, analysing and forecasting energy consumption data.
