SAUTER's intelligent building technology for intelligent power networks
The growing use of renewable energies is continuing to reinforce the trend toward decentralised generation systems. This makes energy distribution considerably more complex than it used to be. The solution to this problem has a name: intelligent power networks, or 'smart grids'. SAUTER's innovative systems offer the ideal way to link the 'smart grid' to the 'smart building'.
Modern buildings offer far more than protection against the wind and the weather: they can think on their feet, they protect the environment and they make life easier for the users. In a nutshell, modern buildings are smart. Why? Innovative building automation – as provided by SAUTER – networks the technical installations within the building so as to create an ideal interface with the smart grid (as intelligent power networks are known). They link power plants, electricity storage units, network operators and consumers with one another. Status information and load flow data from individual elements of the network (such as generation plants and consumers) can be called up and processed in real time.
Constant load and flexible prices based on timing
This enhanced interaction makes profitable energy management possible. Electricity utilities and network operators have a clear objective: they want to avoid peaks by shifting the timing of power consumption. End customers benefit from this through flexible prices that vary according to the time of day and the utilisation of grid capacity. However, smart grids are not the only way to spread loads in this way; automatic controls and monitoring of consumer installations in buildings can also achieve this aim.
Building automation is a key factor of success
This is why SAUTER's advanced sensor and control technology, together with ultra-precise analysis and monitoring tools, play a key role in smart buildings. They operate electrical loads – such as chillers, ventilation systems and heat pumps etc. – in such a way as to ensure an optimal indoor climate while minimising energy costs. At the same time, they consolidate information from the interior of the building and make the data available to the operator. This creates transparency and clarity. Moreover, products and solutions from SAUTER make it easy to monitor and minimise consumption by systems and plants, thereby raising user awareness and encouraging the careful use of energy resources. And that is entirely in keeping with SAUTER's awareness of its responsibilities towards customers, operators, users and the environment.
The intelligent building management of the future is, therefore, based on a dual approach: co-ordination of plants that generate and consume power, and foresighted management of thermal storage facilities. Consequently, building automation is a key factor when it comes to optimising energy usage in commercial buildings.
